Richmond Community College is a community college located in Hamlet, North Carolina. The school started in 1964, when the Commission of Public Education beyond the High School Level recommended that the North Carolina Department of Community Colleges establish the Richmond Technical Institute. Later that year, the local community of Richmond County authorized the construction and support of Richmond Technical Institute. The name was changed to Richmond Technical College in 1980. Then in 1987, when the North Carolina General Assembly approved the community college status of the school, the name of the school was changed once again to Richmond Community College.
The school receives an average enrollment of just over 9,500 students each year. Around 3,000 of the students are in curriculum programs, and over 6,500 are in Workforce and Economic Development programs. The school offers a total of 61 different degrees, certificates and diplomas. The Workforce and Economic Development department offers several programs, such as Law Enforcement Training and GEDs, to help students join the workforce soon after they graduate.
Among the degrees, diplomas, and certificates offered by Richmond Community College includes the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science Degrees, which are are college transfer programs. There is also the Associate in Applied Science Degrees which is made up of courses related to the major. These degrees can be completed in two years by a full-time student. Diploma and certificate programs can be completed in an even shorter time frame. Most of the courses offered in these programs can be used to transfer to four-year colleges and universities, where students can continue their 2-year degree and earn a 4-year degree.
